Taiwo Afolabi, the chairman, SIFAX Group, has identified coastal tourism and renewable energy generation as some of the potential areas of growth that Nigeria needs to take advantage of in developing its blue economy.
Dr. Afolabi, while delivering the 16th Convocation Lecture of the Ladoke Akintola University of Technology (LAUTECH), Ogbomoso on the topic “Towards a sustainable blue economy and marine development in Nigeria: trends, challenges and prospects”, noted that the country has many untapped opportunities in the maritime sector.
Bode Ojeniyi, group managing director, Sky Capital & Financial Allied Company Limited, representative of Dr. Taiwo Afolabi, chairman, SIFAX Group delivering the 16th LAUTECH Convocation Lecture recently.
He said developing the country’s blue economy is now more imperative than ever due to the government’s policy of moving away from the largely one-product economy that Nigeria has been running for decades.
He said:
“Serious attention should be devoted to the development of our coastlines by the government as this could spur huge recreational and economic activities around such localities. Coastal tourism development has the potential to provide socio-economic benefits to Nigeria, especially during this period when the Nigerian government is trying to diversify the economy from being a predominantly crude oil-based economy to a multi-product economy, which can withstand the volatility in oil prices in the world market.
“One other lucrative sector within the blue economy concept is the opportunity for harvesting renewable energy. Renewable energies, such as wind, solar, hydro, and tidal energy, are energy alternatives to fossil fuels that can contribute to reducing the carbon footprint of the maritime sector.
“Offshore wind energy is also a real and promising form of renewable energy generated by offshore wind turbines, which makes it possible to take advantage of strong ocean winds for electricity generation later exported to land where it is consumed in several economic activities. In turn, solar energy can be used in power navigation and communication ships’ systems and equipment and those of other floating structures.”

Afolabi further noted that the country can learn from the experience of Phillipines which has deployed more seafarers in the global shipping business than any other country.
He said the country needs to develop a robust maritime educational curriculum that takes into cognizance technology, trends, and the dynamic nature of the industry.
Afolabi, however, cautioned that tapping the potential in the blue economy should be done responsibly and sustainably.
He identified some of the sustainable measures of using the country’s ocean resources. These include the promotion of sustainable aquaculture practices, modern environmental waste management, monitoring, control, and surveillance of Nigeria’s territorial waters, and improvement of maritime safety and security.

Others are the preservation of marine ecosystems, addressing the challenge of pollution in coastal areas, enactment of laws that promote the blue economy and proper regulation by relevant government agencies.

AgriTech company, Foodstuff Store, today announced the introduction of its innovative recycling programme, Techeconomy can report.
The expansion of the corporate mission to include waste management and recycling solutions underlines the company’s commitment to sustainability and environmental responsibility.
Foodstuff Store is providing a way by which their customers who are provided with wholesome and fresh food products directly from farmers can now dispose of their plastic wastes as an added service, thereby reducing their ecological footprint.
For every waste item delivered for recycling by customers, they’ll receive a credit that can be used for a next purchase at the Foodstuff Store.
Not only will this ensure a contribution to a cleaner environment, but it will also provide a way to incentivise their efforts towards adopting sustainability practices.
“We are thrilled to offer our customers a convenient way to recycle and contribute to a cleaner Nigeria and a cleaner planet,” says Diana Tenabe, chief operating officer at Foodstuff Store. “By offering rewards for recycling, we hope to incentivize eco-conscious behavior within our communities in Nigeria.”
Nigeria faces a significant challenge with plastic pollution. The prevalence of single-use plastics, which is caused by widespread use of sachet water pouches, plastic shopping bags, and take-away containers, leads to massive waste generation.
There are also recycling capacity challenges in Nigeria, where only a small percentage of plastic waste gets recycled.
Additionally, indiscriminate disposal of plastics and other waste materials contributes to overflowing landfills with plastics, clogged drainages that lead to flooding, and harming marine life.
Foodstuff Store believes that by working together with its customers, it can create a positive impact on the environment.
This new program allows customers to enjoy the quality products and services they expect from Foodstuff Store, while also contributing to a more sustainable future.

In response to heightened regulatory investigations by Nigerian authorities on cryptocurrency trading platforms, KuCoin, a global cryptocurrency exchange, has announced the temporary suspension of its peer-to-peer (P2P) services for Nigerian users, effective from May 15, 2024.
Naira’s value has been steadily dropping, and the government is pointing fingers at cryptocurrency as a culprit.
This has led to a tense challenge between crypto platforms and Nigerian authorities, with the former leaving the Nigerian market altogether.
The Nigerian Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) recently met with major crypto players, urging them to stop peer-to-peer (P2P) trading using the naira. The SEC blames P2P activity for manipulating the naira and contributing to its depreciation.
Following these warnings, KuCoin, the latest to exit, has joined OKX and Binance, which left the Nigerian market after a public dispute with the government.
The office of the National Security Adviser has heightened investigations of P2P trading, with regulatory bodies like the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), blocking thousands of accounts suspected of crypto activity.
Fintechs and banks have also been instructed to close accounts linked to crypto trading and report them to the authorities.
Emomotimi Agama, the Director-General of the Nigerian Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), has spoken on concerns about the impact of P2P trading on the exchange rate of the Naira, linking it to the depreciation of the national currency.
Despite these regulatory measures, the depreciation of the Naira continues, with the USD reaching a record high exchange rate of ₦1520 as of May 14, reiterating the ongoing challenges in the country’s currency stability.
These measures are causing frustration among Nigeria’s young generation, a demographic heavily invested in cryptocurrency.
For many, crypto is an investment opportunity or even a source of income through remote work with foreign companies paid in stablecoins like USDT. P2P trading allows them to convert these stablecoins back to naira.

The digital landscape is brimming with interfaces competing for our attention and clicks in our daily lives. In today’s competitive market, creating solutions that genuinely address users’ wants, objectives, and pain points is crucial.
This explains why the gospel of Human-Centered Design (HCD) is taking centre stage in this crowded space. It moves the user to the heart of the development process, ensuring interfaces are functional, intuitive, and delightful.
What is Human-Centered Design (HCD), and why should you care?
Human-centered design (HCD) is a methodology that places the user at the heart of the design process.  HCD focuses on how people think, feel, and act daily.
It is the cornerstone of the user, customer, and service experience.
Human-centered design thrives on empathy. It asks designers to step into the user’s shoes and understand their needs, frustrations, and aspirations. This user-centric approach translates into clear, predictable interfaces that cater directly to user goals.
The Pillars and Guiding Principles of Effective HCD

User-Centered: Every design decision prioritises the user. Usability testing and user research become essential tools, ensuring the interface resonates with the target audience.
Consistent: Consistency in design language fosters trust and ease of use. Users shouldn’t have to re-learn how to interact with each new page.
Responsive: In today’s multi-device world, interfaces must adapt seamlessly across desktops, tablets, and phones. Responsiveness ensures a frustration-free experience on any platform.
Accessible: HCD champions inclusivity. By following accessibility guidelines, everyone can use interfaces, regardless of ability.

The Benefits: A Win-Win Proposition for all
Human-Centered design isn’t just about feel-good design; it’s a strategic investment. Here’s how it benefits everyone:

Users: Increased satisfaction, improved accessibility, and a more enjoyable experience.
Businesses: Reduced development costs, higher user retention, and a stronger brand reputation.
Developers: A sense of purpose in creating solutions that truly matter and continuous improvement through user feedback.

The Iterative Process: From User Research to Launch
HCD is an iterative process. Here’s a glimpse into the key phases:

Know Your Users: User research forms the foundation. Through interviews and surveys, designers deeply understand the target audience.
Define the Problem: Data from user research is analysed to pinpoint the core issue the interface aims to address.
Ideate and Design: Brainstorming sessions generate potential solutions. These are then translated into prototypes for user testing.
Test and Iterate: User feedback is collected through usability testing. This feedback informs further refinement of the design.
Launch and Maintain: The interface is launched, but the journey doesn’t end there. User feedback continues to be collected to ensure ongoing improvement.

Your Role as a  Frontend Engineer/Architect:
Frontend software engineers play a crucial role in translating Human-centered design principles into reality. Your expertise in HTML, CSS, JavaScript, and frameworks like React brings the user interface to life, ensuring it’s functional, aesthetically pleasing, and performs well across devices.
Effective collaboration with UI/UX designers and product managers is key to maintaining design fidelity and aligning the interface with user needs and business objectives.

The Future of Design: User-Centric and Ever-Evolving
In an increasingly competitive digital landscape, HCD offers a clear path forward. By prioritising user needs and fostering empathy, we can design usable and loved interfaces. As technology evolves, so will HCD, ensuring our interfaces remain user-centric and deliver exceptional experiences.
